A Tale of the Heart

Last week I had an appointment with my cardiologist. While waiting for the doctor I looked around his office at his wall charts and the heart models on his shelves. I studied the illustration of the healthy heart and one of a heart that was diseased.

I then looked at the model of a heart and marveled how that small organ was so vital to the working of the body.

After my appointment I went to Wal-Mart to have my blood pressure prescription filled. When I entered the door I was bombarded with red and pink boxes of candy, a rack of lace and glitter decorated cards and huge Valentine’s Day cutouts hanging from the ceiling. These beautiful trappings of the holiday bore no witness to the heart I’d seen in my doctor’s office.

Which was the true picture of the heart? Both, I think. The actual heart charts and models give us a medical understanding of the heart that each one of us has beating in their chest. The beautiful hearts at the store gives us the romantic view of the heart where love dwells.

I am a romantic. I have my college love letters tied with a satin ribbon. I saved a candle from my wedding that was lovingly used in my daughter’s ceremony. Pieces of ivy from my wedding bouquet are planted in my garden. So I enjoy a day set aside to focus on the ones I love.

I hope each of you dear readers have a beautiful Valentine’s Day. For you that are couples, whether you have walked a long time together or just a few steps on this journey of life, I pray you love each other with a love that goes deeper than the sentiments printed on the sparkly cards. For those alone, I pray you feel the Father’s love stamped upon your hearts.

I am blessed to have the love of my husband of almost forty-six years. I’ve kept all the valentines he’s given me during our marriage. The precious Mommy Valentines from my children are in safekeeping.

I am also blessed to be loved by my heavenly Father and have all of His valentines bound in His precious book. Take the time to read His love letter to you and learn the true tale of the heart. We love because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19 NIV

Come go home with me and I’ll let you pick the first piece of candy out of my heart shaped box, even if you choose my favorite caramel.

Love to you,

Dee Dee
