My Buddy: Torry Martin

Some gifts come wrapped in pretty paper adorned with shiny ribbons. Not so with one of my favorite gifts of all time. This gift came in the form of an oversized, red-haired fellow, outfitted with infectious laughter, quicker-than-lighting wit and talent galore. Not to say this whirlwind of energy however, does not shine, for he does; only his glow comes from the beautiful reflection of God on his life. His name is Torry Martin.

Torry and I met a number of years ago at Blue Ridge Mountain Christian Writers Conference, a premier writer’s event set in the majestic mountains of Western North Carolina. Upon our first meeting we both knew we would become best buddies, each other’s encourager, appreciators of each other’s talents. What joy for me to watch as Torry’s star rises in the Christian creative arts, such as acting, comedy and screenwriting.

After all of those lofty accolades, you who know Torry, know that his mind never stops and his flair for finding good-natured mischief is ever present. I have been a witness/ partner in a few of these fun endeavors. Lets just say my hometown is still recovering from one of his fun infused visits! Torry always leaves his audiences and friends with echoes of laughter and a touch of his caring spirit.

The purpose of this blog post is to celebrate the release of Torry and his co-writer, Doug Peterson’s book, Of Moose and Men. The book is a recounting of Torry’s experiences in Alaska, many of them hilarious, but always paired with nuggets of God’s truth. The book’s back cover states” if God can reclaim and repurpose Torry Martin’s life, He can do the same for you and those you love.” Torry simply wants to share Jesus, the one who heals, redeems and restores.

Find it on christianbook.com or Amazon.

Be prepared to laugh over and over again at Torry’s antics, but have a hankie close by for some heart-touching moments.

If you get the opportunity to hear Torry speak or catch his appearances on TV or in a theater I encourage you to do so. My favorite venue of Torry’s is the conference setting where he draws the audience into his stories, leaving them feeling refreshed in the Lord and that they have made a new friend shod in his ever-present, colorful Doc Martens.

I am blessed to have him as my buddy.

Truly blessed.
