Celebrating Father's Day in the Hollow

by Dee Dee Parker

Welcome sweet reader,

Happy Father's Day!

Everyone here in Thistledown Hollow wishes the fathers in our community a Happy Father's Day! This issue of the gazette is aimed at celebrating you.

Preacher Amos and Pastor Otis send a reminder of the joint Father's Day service Sunday that will be held at Thistledown Hollow Baptist Church. It had originally been scheduled to take place at Pastor Otis's Ivy On The Rock Church, but due to a kitchen plumbing issue, it has been shifted to the Baptist church. Tine Sutton, head of the Moving on Up Ladies Group at Ivy On The Rock said there was no way they could handle the dishes with the plumbing having a mind of its own. Apparently,  Pastor Otis detected a hint of a smile when she delivered the news about the dishes.

Preacher Amos says the celebration will start with a pancake breakfast to be served in the fellowship hall. The breakfast will be cooked by the women of the two churches in honor of our fathers. Pastor Otis said everyone is invited. At the worship service, the youngest, oldest, and the father with the most children will be recognized with a small gift. The men of the two churches will make up the choir and Carson Beck will bless us with a song he has written himself, which should be heart warming, with him being the father of seven.

Pastor and Preacher love the joint services. They say God smiles when He sees all his kids of different colors getting together.

Wedding Bells
Wedding bells again rang throughout the hollow. Constance Neighbors and Grady Fields were married last Saturday amid a large number of friends and family. Constance and Grady, both in their early eighties, appreciated the accommodations that were made to the gazebo. Jerry West was happy to put up hand rails on either side of the steps leading into the gazebo. We all remember the tumble Constance took at the nursing home last year. To further prevent slippage, nothing was allowed to be thrown like birdseed. Instead everyone was given little white horns to blow as the couple carefully made their way to the reception. The plastic horns were left over from the little theater production of Seventy-Six Trombones year-before-last and fit the bill perfectly.

Reels and Lures Shop
All of you youngsters are invited by the Reels and Lures Shop in town to write a short essay about your fathers. The grand prize will be a Rod and Reel (don't mind the dent, it's tiny and won't affect the fish you'll catch). Others prizes will include a tackle box and a net. All that enter will get a card good for 25% off on the next purchase. The youngster's essays will be divided into age groups.

Reels and Lures wishes all the fathers a good day and lifetime of good fishing.

Hollow Happenings

Father's Day:
Tinker Brown reports that in honor of Fathers Day, he will help the little ones of the hollow make a small tie rack for their fathers. All of the materials were donated by ARC Lumber located on Maple Avenue downtown. ARC Lumber is happy to donate the supplies and only asks you remember their business when your next remodeling project comes around. ARC will conveniently add a sticker with their telephone number on the bottom of the tie racks.

Cotton Roberts said Percy Moses, when told of the project, said maybe he and several others in the hollow could put the tie pegs to better use for the hanging up of their overalls.

Concert:
A free concert will be held at the gazebo Saturday night. The Mason Jar Relics will perform and also play for the High Step Cloggers. The Cloggers will bring their portable dance floor. Come on out and enjoy a night of toe-tapping music. Be sure to bring your chairs and blankets. Preacher Amos recommends chairs over blankets due to the high count of ant hills on the south side of the gazebo.

Book Club:
Thistledown Hollow is starting its very own book club! Susie Mae will head our group, being she has the inside scoop on books by owning the book store. We are in need of a name for our newly formed group. Please send in your name suggestions...all will be considered.

Please drop by my flower shed (around back of the house) and choose a cemetery arrangement for Father's Day. Each $5 arrangement comes with a choice of an ornament honoring your loved one to keep year after year. Mason Jars are $1 if you need one.

Clover Jackson's Flower Creations wishes you a Happy Father's Day.

Clive Russell reported a scary story. His wife, Clara, went ahead and gave Clive his Father's Day's gift early because he was working on clearing away the fall and winter debris from the flower bed. The gift was one of those new fangled rakes that picks up leaves so as to keep someone like Clive, who has a bad back, from having to bend over. Clive was enjoying the rake immensely until he started to put the leaves into the basket and he noticed something moving in the pile. It was a snake!!!! Sweet Mercy, Clive threw the rake/snake as far away from him as he could. Clive said anyone was welcome to come get the rake for free and that he'd hired a young man to do his raking. This is being filed away as Rakes and Snakes, oh my!
Fred, Ted, Jed, and Gary

Eustace Watson's dogs are featured in the Coon Dog Review this month. His dogs, Fred, Ted, Jed, and Gary are much decorated in their field. Be sure to congratulate Eustace when you see him. Eustace's wife made him a cake in honor of the article and she made homemade dog biscuits for Fred, Ted, Jed and Gary. With it being Father's Day, Eustace said he wanted to add that the dogs were like family to him.

Words of Wisdom:
To be a good father you need to know The Father.

Sweet Reader, come go home with me next week.

You are loved and welcomed here.

Be kind to each other.

Oh, what is your favorite memory of your father? What are you planning on doing for Father's Day? Do you miss your dad like I miss mine?

Do you have any ideas for a name for the book club?

  1. Miss my Daddy every day. I miss his happiness with life. I will be with my sons and my brother.

  2. Well, my mama always said that it’s best to talk in simple terms. So you might want to consider calling your book club The Literary Ladies of Thistledown Hollow. That’s just a suggestion, honey. I’m sure whatever you decide will be just fine.

  3. Wonderful, as usual! A favorite memory of my father was him taking me to work with him. He drove a truck delivering mining parts to local coal mines, so it was fun going along for the ride. Not sure about the Book Club . . . I'll have to stew on that one for a while.
